Worship music, Gospel, Standard Hymns, or Contemporary Christian?

Related Topics

I am partial to Contemporary myself.
I can’t believe I have to add this, to those of you that believe you cant play a piano or a guitar to celebrate Christ…. Please.

If Jesus had ment all that you said then why did He inspire King David to make all those instruments for the temple back in the day. I believe the word says that his son Solomon had approx 4,000 instruments in his worship band at the temple (some of which King David made himself). At the dedication of the temple the trumpets sounded the priest sang the the GLORY (shekina ?spelling?) of the Lord came down so hard they fell down and couldn’t minister.

There is no prohibition on instruments in the NT that I know of, and my extensive study of the Hebrew words for praise in this matter, conclusively indicatethat we should use instruments to praise him. God did make a few of us that can’t sing but can play a guitar like a ringin bell.
PS I was blessed to sing, and play purcussion, and a little guitar.
I just can’t spell

all of the above…i really like stuff like ‘i can only imagine’ and ‘lord, we lift your name on high’, but i’m also partial to hymns like ‘we shall behold Him’, ‘my shepherd will supply my need’…and of course ‘amazing grace’…also really get into ‘soon and very soon’…

I like "Christian rock" like relient K and stuff. is that contemporary?

  • wolfeblayde:

All of the above. I’m an old country gal, so Gospel and standard hymns are my favorites, but I’ll listen to just about any good Christian music.

The only "music" authorized by the Bible for the worship service is singing. Please note the words of the inspired writers of the New Testament: "And do not be drunk with wine in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord" (Ephesians 5:18,19). "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him" (Colossians 3:16,17). "Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name" (Hebrews 13:15).

Please note that these verses mention an instrument. It is not an instrument made by man, but one made by God. We are commanded to sing. This is the “fruit of our lips." Our singing must be accompanied by our hearts. We are commanded to sing and make melody in the heart. We must sing with grace in our hearts to the Lord. The only instrument authorized in worship is one’s heart!

The New Testament tells us how God wants us to worship Him today (John 4:24). However, it says nothing about using instruments of music made by the hands of men. Therefore, if we use such instruments, we are guilty of adding to God’s Word (Revelation 22:18,19). This is a sin!

According to historians, the church did not use instruments of music for several hundred years after the time of the apostles. In fact, the first known instrument of music to be brought into the church was one which the emperor of France gave to Pope Vitalian of the Roman Catholic Church in the seventh century. This was several hundred years after the New Testament was written.

Please note too the expressions “speaking to yourselves,” and “teaching and admonishing one another.” These statements show reciprocal action. This is action that we do to one another at the same time. It means that each member of the congregation joins in the singing. By doing so, he teaches and encourages his fellow Christians. At the same time, they are teaching and encouraging him by their singing. This shows that every Christian must participate in the singing as best he can. There is no authority in the New Testament for only one person to sing, or even a group to sing to the rest of the congregation. God’s will is that every Christian should sing and by doing this teach and encourage every other Christian. Special singing groups are an unauthorized addition to the pattern of worship given in the New Testament. Therefore, those who use them are sinning.

If we simply follow that which God has revealed in the New Testament for His church, we will praise Him with our voices. The whole congregation will join in this praise. No other kind of music is commanded. If we add mechanical instruments or special singing groups, we are not abiding in the teaching of Christ (2 John 9). We have added to that which God has authorized ( Revelation 22:18,19). This makes our worship worthless to God for we are following the doctrines and commandments of men (Matthew 15:9).

Jesus said, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). We must follow the pattern of worship God has given in the New Testament in order to worship in truth (John 17:17). Choirs, solos, and mechanical instruments are not according to the truth!!

I love worship music, gospel, and contemporary they’re all beautiful.

  • Dave P:

The best thing the christian church has going for it is Bach and pipe organs. I can do without the human voices.

  • aali_and_harith:

I’ve always been rather traditional. Growing up going to church every sunday it was standard hymns we sang. I’ve discovered that I’m pretty traditional when it comes to lots of new things coming out – that I prefer the old version. :)

  • Toni C *prayer is the answer:

i love them all – anything that magnifies Jesus Christ my Lord & Savoir but i would have to pick worship *

it puts me in that realm of completely surrender
    {love the question}

  • Tzadiq:

I tend more toward Worship music or contemporary Christian.
Hymns are a close second. Nothing as comforting as a hymn when your in the dumps. Gospel I like some but its not my choice.

TG – Read Psalms 149 and 150 I mean just off the top of my head. Come on thats a really tired drum your beating. Peace be unto you.

  • achoo:

contemp christian, but love the old hymns that have deeper meanings

  • ac28:

Love them all. I don’t exactly have a "style"….as long as it’s not rap, I’m good. (Christian rap, cause we’re talking about Christian music. Obviously secular music is ruled out).

  • biblestudent07:

In the bible, the Christian is exhorted and admonished to do this…."speaking to yourself in psalms hymns and spiritual songs, making melody in your heart to the Lord." I notice it doesnt mention listening to "wordly music" which so many that "call" themselves Christians listen to these days. I myself like contemporary Christian music too. Wordly music such as country and rock and hip hop and blues are not from God. It is fleshly and carnal and has no redeeming value. In fact the lyrics usually encourages conduct unbecoming to a Christian. I know all this because I used to not be a Christian and I used to listen to the garabage the world puts out. But then I came the Christ and let me tell you….He has the best artists singing the best songs ever these days.

  • AdoreHim:

if this were just about music, I would probably say Cont. Christian- but worship should never be about the music style. I think we get so caught in it that we forget what worship is. The music is just a tool- granted we can have preferences but it becomes "worship wars" which it has in these past years then we have gotten it all wrong- Like Matt Redmann’s Heart of Worship says- "we bring You more than a song, cause a song in itself is not what You have required". "It should be all about Jesus" not about the music. I know I said more than you were asking but this is where God has me right now.

  • sdb deacon:

I like them all. When I’m driving I listen to Contemporary Christian. But when I’m in church I prefer standard hymns.

  • John 1:1:

I prefer Bluegrass Gospel and the Standard Hymns. I don’t believe there is a bad way to praise God.

  • ramjet:

I sing in our worship band at my church. And I sing in another worship band at an informal praise and prayer evening once a month.
Most of what we play is contemporary worship music. We mix in hymns sometimes just because some like them…. but sometimes we really jazz them up.

    blessings :)

  • Pastor Rick:

I have been a Christian for a long time and grew up listening to the old time hymns but fell in love with the contemporary music started in the seventies. Some of the first to try it used rock and roll songs with new lyrics that had a Christian message. I really like it all, but what is most important to me is not the style of music played during the worship, but does it flow and is it Spirit led rather than human led and there is a difference. One you just sing while the other moves you to God. The Bible instructs us to worship Him in spirit and in truth. Are we?
